Holmfirth to Deepcar: half an hour for a straight answer

The Holme Valley is served mostly by small family practices, and a few of them offer implants, sometimes through a dentist who visits on set days. Their implant pages lean heavily on reviews and say little about cost, who does the surgery, or how long it takes. Directory sites fill the gap with figures like "£1,000 to £2,000 a tooth", which does not match what a complete implant and crown costs anywhere in Yorkshire. For someone in Holmfirth who has reached the point of losing most of their teeth, or is fed up with a plate that floats, that is not much to go on.

Deepcar Dental Care is 25 to 30 minutes south on the A616, in Deepcar just beyond Stocksbridge. Full-arch implant bridges, implant-retained dentures and conventional dentures are all made here, which means nobody has a reason to push you towards the dearest one. Dr Ibraheem Ijaz places and restores every implant himself, with visiting implant clinician Mohammed Anabtawi on the most involved reconstructions. The practice is open 8am to 8pm every day, prices are on the fees page, and parking is free at the door.

Fixed full-arch teeth, clip-in dentures or a plate: the trade-offs

A lower full denture rests on a ridge that carries on shrinking for the rest of your life. A plate that fitted in 2020 may be rocking by 2026, not because it was badly made but because the bone beneath it has gone. That single fact explains most of the difference between the three options.

A conventional denture

From £650, no surgery, ready in a few weeks. An upper plate seals against the palate and can work well for years. A lower one has no palate to grip and relies on the ridge, the tongue and the cheeks, which is why so many people keep theirs in a drawer. Chewing force is a fraction of natural teeth, and relines are needed as the ridge changes. It remains the right answer for some patients, and our dentures page explains the types.

An implant-retained (clip-in) denture

Two implants in the lower jaw, or four in the upper, with press-stud attachments that the denture snaps onto. It still comes out at night for cleaning, but it no longer moves when you eat, and the implants slow the bone loss beneath. This is the biggest improvement in comfort for the least surgery, and a good choice if budget or dexterity rules out a fixed bridge. It is priced per implant plus the denture, and quoted in writing after the scan.

A fixed full-arch bridge

Four to six implants carry a bridge of twelve teeth that is screwed in place and only removed by the dentist. From £8,000 per jaw. In most cases a temporary fixed bridge is fitted within days of surgery, so you are not without teeth, and the final bridge follows four to six months later once the implants have integrated. Chewing is close to natural teeth. The compromises: cleaning under the bridge takes a water flosser and a few minutes a day, the bridge itself needs servicing every few years, and it is the most surgery and the highest price of the three. Read more on our full-arch page.

Which suits you turns on four things: how much bone is left (the CBCT scan answers that), whether it is the upper or lower jaw, how well you can manage cleaning, and money. We will say plainly which we would choose in your position, and if that is the clip-in denture rather than the £8,000 bridge, we will say so.

Questions, answered

Questions from Holmfirth patients

What is the quickest way from Holmfirth to Deepcar?

The A635 to New Mill and then the A616 over the Flouch and down through Stocksbridge, about 25 to 30 minutes. Going via Huddersfield and the M1 is much longer.

Can I have my denture made in Holmfirth and just the implants at Deepcar?

For a clip-in denture the implants and the denture need to be planned together, so it is far better to have both done here. Routine check-ups and hygiene can stay with your Holmfirth dentist and we will write to them.

Do I have to be without teeth for months?

No. For a fixed full arch a temporary bridge is usually fitted within days of surgery. For a clip-in denture your existing denture is adjusted to wear over the healing implants.

How do I clean under a fixed bridge?

A water flosser and small interdental brushes along the join between bridge and gum, once a day, plus hygienist visits every six months. The bridge is unscrewed for a deeper clean every few years.

My old lower denture is loose. Are two implants really enough?

For a lower clip-in denture, two implants at the front of the jaw are the standard and well-studied design. The denture still rests on the gum at the back; the implants stop it lifting and sliding.

What if I cannot afford the fixed bridge?

The clip-in denture gives most of the everyday benefit for a good deal less, and a new conventional denture from £650 is always an option. Finance over up to 60 months is available for any of the three.
