Why Chesterfield patients look past Sheffield to Deepcar

Chesterfield clinics that publish implant fees tend to quote around £2,800 for a single tooth with its crown, and somewhere above £18,000 for a full arch on four implants. Some give a fair outline of the timeline. What is harder to find on a Chesterfield page is the name of the person doing the surgery, what a graft would cost if you need one, whether finance is available, and, above all, a straight description of who is not a good candidate. Every implant page says implants suit "most healthy adults"; few say what happens to the rest.

Deepcar Dental Care sits on the far side of Sheffield from Chesterfield, in Deepcar near Stocksbridge, but the M1 makes it a 45-minute drive with free parking at the end rather than a city-centre car park. Implants here are placed and restored by Dr Ibraheem Ijaz, who holds a postgraduate diploma in implant dentistry and has placed more than 200 implants since 2022, with our visiting implant clinician Mohammed Anabtawi joining him for complex surgical cases. Fees are on the fees page, and the practice is open seven days from 8am to 8pm.

Who implants suit, and who should think twice

A dental implant has no ligament. A natural tooth hangs in its socket on a thin cushion of fibres that lets you feel a poppy seed between your teeth. An implant is fused straight to bone. That is why it is so strong, and also why the bone and gum around it have to be healthy before it goes in: there is no cushion to forgive problems later.

Good candidates

  • Adults whose jaws have finished growing. For front teeth in young adults that can mean waiting until the early twenties, because an implant placed too early ends up sitting short as the neighbouring teeth continue to erupt.
  • Healthy gums, or gum disease that has been treated and is stable. The bacteria that cause gum disease cause the implant equivalent, peri-implantitis.
  • Enough bone, or bone that can be rebuilt with a graft. The CBCT scan settles this; guessing from an ordinary X-ray does not.
  • Non-smokers, or smokers willing to stop for the healing months. Smoking roughly doubles the chance of an implant failing to integrate.
  • Medical conditions that are under control. Well-managed diabetes is fine; a high HbA1c is a reason to wait. Blood thinners are managed, not a bar.

Reasons to wait, or to choose something else

  • Active, untreated gum disease. Treat it first, with our hygienist or your own, then re-scan.
  • Intravenous bisphosphonates or denosumab, usually given for cancer in the bone, carry a real risk of jawbone failing to heal. Tablet bisphosphonates for osteoporosis, such as alendronic acid, carry a much smaller risk and need a conversation, not an automatic no.
  • Radiotherapy to the jaw. Implants are sometimes possible but belong in a hospital setting.
  • Heavy night-time grinding. Not a bar, but the crown will be designed for it and you will be asked to wear a guard.
  • Pregnancy. Surgery and scans are deferred until after the birth.
  • Anyone who will not clean around the implant every day. That is not a judgement; it is the single biggest predictor of how long it lasts.

Age on its own is not on either list. We place implants for patients in their eighties whose bone and gums beat some in their forties. If implants are not right for you, the alternatives are a bridge on the neighbouring teeth or a denture, and we will tell you which one we would choose in your position. We do turn people away, and we would rather do it at a £100 consultation than after surgery.

Getting to Deepcar from Chesterfield by the M1 or the A61

The quickest route is the motorway: join the M1 at junction 29, head north to junction 35A, and take the A616 towards Stocksbridge. Leave the bypass for Stocksbridge and Deepcar and follow Manchester Road to number 334. The A61 through Sheffield is shorter in miles but slower, running up the Dronfield bypass, through the city and out along Penistone Road and the A6102 through Oughtibridge; it is a fair option on a Sunday. Either way, allow 45 minutes. Parking is free directly outside and the surgeries are on the ground floor.

Questions, answered

Questions from Chesterfield patients

Which is quicker from Chesterfield, the M1 or the A61 through Sheffield?

On a weekday the M1 to junction 35A and then the A616 is more reliable, at about 45 minutes. The A61 through the city can be quicker early on a Sunday but is slow through Meadowhead and Hillsborough in the week.

Do I need a referral from my Chesterfield dentist?

No. You can book directly. If you do have a dentist in Chesterfield we are happy to write to them with the plan and scan findings so that your routine care carries on there.

I smoke. Will you refuse to treat me?

Not outright. We will ask you to stop from before surgery until the implant has integrated, because smoking roughly doubles the failure rate, and we will be honest that if you cannot, a bridge or denture may serve you better.

I take alendronic acid for osteoporosis. Can I have an implant?

Usually yes. Tablet bisphosphonates carry a small risk of poor bone healing, which we will discuss with you and, if needed, your GP. Intravenous bisphosphonates are a different matter and generally rule implants out.

I had gum disease. Does that rule me out?

Not if it has been treated and is stable. We check pocket depths at the consultation and will want to see healthy gums for a few months before placing an implant, because the same bacteria attack the bone around implants.

Is 75 too old for implants?

No. There is no upper age limit. What matters is bone, gum health, medicines and general health, all of which we check at the consultation.
