Ecclesfield has a dental practice on the doorstep, but it belongs to a national chain and does not publish a whitening price. The private clinics on Penistone Road that list Chapeltown and Ecclesfield as their patch offer Enlighten and home kits, again without a price, sometimes tied to a monthly membership. And, as everywhere in north Sheffield, there are salons and home-visit operators offering whitening for under £100, which is the part of the market that concerns us most and the reason this page is about the law.
Deepcar is 15 minutes from Chapeltown through Grenoside and Oughtibridge, or about the same from Ecclesfield via the A61 and A6102, with free parking directly outside. We publish our fees, £350 for home whitening and £550 for Enlighten, and the new patient examination is £85 with X-rays. Visits run until 8pm seven days a week. Plenty of S35 families already come to us for check-ups and emergencies, and whitening is a short add-on to that.
UK cosmetics law sets three limits on hydrogen peroxide in whitening products, and every safe or unsafe option you will be offered sits on one side of them.
Anything sold over the counter or online in the UK must contain 0.1% hydrogen peroxide or less. That is far too weak to change the colour inside a tooth, which is why strips and pens disappoint. Whitening toothpastes work by scrubbing, not bleaching.
Between those figures, a product may only be supplied by a GDC-registered dentist, after a clinical examination, with the first use carried out by the dentist or under their direct supervision. A hygienist or therapist can continue treatment on the dentist's prescription. Sixteen per cent carbamide peroxide is the same thing in slow-release form and sits under the same rule. This band is where all real whitening happens, and the examination requirement exists because gel on an untreated cavity, a cracked tooth or inflamed gums causes pain and an uneven result.
Stronger gels, often sold from abroad, are illegal for cosmetic whitening here. They cause the blistered gums and severe sensitivity that make the news.
A beauty salon, a kiosk or a mobile operator cannot legally supply anything above 0.1%. So either the product they use is useless, or they are breaking the law. Some use chlorine dioxide, an acid that etches enamel to make it look brighter for a day and rougher for good. The GDC prosecutes for illegal whitening, and it is worth knowing that under-18s cannot be whitened at all except to treat disease.
The GDC register is public and searchable online by name. If the person supplying your gel is not on it, walk away. The gel we supply is labelled with its strength and batch, the trays are made from a scan of your teeth so the gel stays on the enamel, and your first use is under our supervision, as the law intends.
