Chapeltown and Ecclesfield have long-established family practices on Loundside and around the village that offer crowns and veneers, and their pages say the treatment takes two visits and that costs will be explained at a consultation. What they do not say is the cost, who does the work or how long a crown should last. They also close at 5pm and are shut at weekends, which is fine for a check-up and awkward for a 90-minute preparation appointment.
Deepcar Dental Care is 15 minutes away through Grenoside and Oughtibridge. We publish the fee, £750 to £1,000 per tooth, and this page breaks down what it covers, because a crown is one of the few dental treatments where the price is mostly other people’s skilled time. Dr Ibraheem Ijaz, who holds a postgraduate certificate in restorative and aesthetic dentistry, does the whole thing, and we are open 8am to 8pm, Monday to Sunday, with free parking outside.

What pushes a tooth towards the top of the range is a difficult shade match, a core build-up or a zirconia crown for a heavy biter. What keeps it at the lower end is a straightforward molar with sound structure. Why crown a root-treated tooth at all? Because once the nerve and blood supply are gone the tooth dries and becomes brittle, and a back tooth under chewing load will eventually split down the middle, at which point the only option is extraction and, if you want it replaced, an implant from £2,400. From Chapeltown, take the road up through Grenoside and drop down to Oughtibridge, then turn right onto the A6102 towards Stocksbridge; from Ecclesfield, join the A61 towards Hillsborough and turn onto the A6102 at Middlewood. Either way you follow the A6102 through Wharncliffe Side into Deepcar, where the practice is at 334 Manchester Road with free parking in front. About 15 minutes. Questions, answered
You can, and for NHS work it may be the right choice. Patients come to Deepcar when they want an all-ceramic crown at a published price, from one named dentist, with an evening or weekend fitting.
NHS crowns are provided where clinically necessary under Band 3, £332.10, usually in metal or porcelain bonded to metal. All-ceramic, hand-layered crowns are a private treatment.
Only if the nerve is dying or dead, which the X-ray and a cold test show. Many cracked or heavily filled teeth are crowned with a healthy nerve; if a root canal is needed first, Nik carries it out under a microscope.
A front crown has to match its neighbour in colour and translucency exactly, which takes more laboratory time. A back crown needs strength more than artistry.
Usually the preparation within the week and the crown fitted a fortnight later. A temporary protects the crack in between.
Closer to 20 at 5pm on the A61. Most patients from Ecclesfield book 7pm or weekend slots and make it in 15.
