Dronfield has a handful of private and mixed practices on Snape Hill, at Dronfield Woodhouse and in the town centre, and their crown pages explain the two-visit process and list porcelain, zirconia and gold as options. None gives a price, none says how long a crown lasts, and none answers the question most people bring to the consultation: does this tooth actually need a crown, or would a filling do?
That question is the whole of this page. At Deepcar Dental Care, 40 minutes up the A61 or the M1, Dr Ibraheem Ijaz, who holds a postgraduate certificate in restorative and aesthetic dentistry, decides on the X-ray and a bite test rather than the price list. When a crown is the answer it costs £750 to £1,000, in writing, and can be fitted on an evening or a weekend because we open 8am to 8pm seven days a week. Free parking is directly outside.
A crown removes more tooth than any other restoration, so it has to earn its place. These are the rules we use.

The bite test is worth describing because it is what most patients have never had. A small plastic wedge is placed on one cusp at a time and you bite and let go. A cracked tooth hurts on the release, not the bite, as the crack springs shut. That single test, plus the X-ray, sorts most “do I need a crown” questions in five minutes. The direct route is the A61 north through Sheffield, past Meadowhead and the city centre, out along Penistone Road and then the A6102 through Hillsborough and Oughtibridge to Deepcar. Outside rush hour that is about 40 minutes. The alternative is the M1 from junction 29 north to junction 35A, then the A616 and Manchester Road (A6102) into Deepcar, which is similar in time and easier at 5pm. Questions, answered
Usually because they want a straight answer on whether the tooth needs one, a fixed price and an evening or weekend fitting, none of which the local pages offer.
It depends on how much sound tooth is left and whether there is a crack. The £85 examination with X-rays and a bite test will show which, and we will explain the reasoning either way.
Milled same-day crowns exist, but a hand-layered ceramic from a laboratory looks more natural and fits better at the margin, so we do two visits about a fortnight apart.
Yes, on a back molar for a heavy grinder gold is the most durable material there is. Most patients prefer all-ceramic, which is what we quote here; gold is priced on your plan.
Yes. Only local anaesthetic is used, so you can drive straight after either visit.
Ten to fifteen years is typical, and often longer. The main risk is decay creeping under the edge unnoticed because the tooth has no nerve, so yearly checks matter.
