Barnsley is the town we see most new general patients from, and the reason is mostly arithmetic. Directories list roughly half of Barnsley's NHS practices as taking new adults, and some of those run waiting lists of up to six months. NHS South Yorkshire's own guidance says practices are not obliged to take you on and do not have to keep a list at all. On the private side, the practices that rank first for Barnsley are good, established and mostly open Monday to Friday in office hours, and most of them do not put a single fee on their website. So you can be seen, but you find out what it costs afterwards.
Deepcar Dental Care is 30 minutes away on the A628 through Penistone, and we do the opposite: every fee is published, the first visit is £85 with X-rays included, and we open 8am to 8pm seven days a week. Patients from Dodworth, Hoyland, Wombwell and Royston already make the trip for emergency care; this page is for the ones who then ask whether they can just stay.
The examination is a fixed price. £85 for a new patient, £63 for a routine recall. It includes the bitewing X-rays, the gum measurements and the oral cancer screen. A thorough first look is the cheapest thing we do and the most valuable: most of what it finds is small, and small is cheap to fix.
Fillings vary, and here is why. A white filling is £150 to £220. The number depends on three things: how many surfaces of the tooth are involved, whether the cavity has reached the contact point with the neighbouring tooth, and where it sits in the mouth. A one-surface filling on a front tooth is a 30-minute job at the bottom of the range. A three-surface filling on a back molar that needs a matrix band to rebuild the wall, then careful shaping so your bite feels normal, is at the top. Decay spreads sideways under the enamel, so a pinhole you can barely see on the surface is sometimes a cavity the width of a fingernail underneath, and the X-ray tells us which before we quote.
Silver or white. A silver amalgam filling is £120 to £160 and lasts well on back teeth. White composite is bonded to the tooth, so less healthy tooth is drilled away to hold it in, and it is the only choice where a filling shows. Either is fine on a molar; the plan lists both with prices.
What is not in the filling price. If decay has reached the nerve, a filling will not settle the tooth and we will say so before starting, because the honest options are then root canal treatment from £450 or extraction from £120. Nobody should pay for a filling that was never going to work.
The things that quietly add up elsewhere. Separate charges for X-rays, a hygiene visit that turns out to be compulsory before treatment, or a plan that is only explained verbally. Here X-rays are in the examination fee, hygiene is recommended rather than required, and the plan is written, itemised and valid whether you go ahead now or in six months. From Barnsley town centre take the A628 Manchester Road out through Penistone, then the A616 south to the Stocksbridge bypass and Manchester Road (A6102) into Deepcar. From Hoyland, Birdwell or the Dearne, the M1 south to junction 35A and the A616 is quicker. Either way it is about 30 minutes. An NHS band 1 check-up is cheaper than any private examination, and band 2 covers fillings for a fixed fee. What you buy privately is time, choice of material, a named dentist and being seen this week, seven days. If you have an NHS place that works, keep it.
For a recall every six to twelve months, most Barnsley patients think so, particularly with weekend slots. For a family, booking everyone together on one Saturday makes the trip once, not four times.
