Holmfirth is well served for a small town: a long-standing practice on the Huddersfield road, a newer private clinic, and a village surgery that mixes NHS, plan and private. The practice that ranks first quotes £85 for a new patient consultation with X-rays from £15 on top, which is a fair price and the same as ours. What the Holmfirth practices do not publish is anything beyond that: no filling prices, no opening hours, no named dentist, and no clear line on NHS availability. Over the Pennine side, NHS books in Kirklees open and close without much notice.
Deepcar Dental Care is 25 to 30 minutes away on the Sheffield side of the Flouch. We charge £85 for the first examination, X-rays included, and we open 8am to 8pm seven days a week. The fee guide lists everything, and the dentist who examines you, Dr Ibraheem Ijaz, Nik or Dr George, is the one who treats you. For Holme Valley families the weekend slots are usually the deciding factor.
Patients from Holmfirth often arrive with fillings placed 20 years ago in Huddersfield and ask whether they need replacing. Usually not. Here is what we tell them.
How long they last. A well-placed silver amalgam filling on a back tooth commonly lasts 15 years and often much longer; some we see are older than the patient's children. A white composite filling in a small cavity lasts around 7 to 12 years, sometimes more, but composites are more sensitive to how they were placed: the tooth must be bone dry while the material is bonded, which is why a good white filling on a back molar takes 45 minutes and a rubber sheet, not ten minutes and a cotton roll. A filling is never replaced here because of its age. It is replaced when it has failed.
What failure looks like. A dark line or gap at the edge where the filling meets the tooth, floss that shreds on it, a chip you can feel with your tongue, or new decay under it on a bitewing X-ray. Sensitivity to cold that lasts a few seconds is often nothing; pain that lingers for half a minute after hot suggests the nerve is involved and the tooth may need root canal treatment rather than a new filling.
What shortens the life of a filling. Grinding and clenching, which most people do at night without knowing; a nightguard adds years to every filling and crown in the mouth. Chewing ice and boiled sweets. Frequent sugar, because decay starts at the margin of a filling more easily than on sound enamel. Acidic drinks, which soften the tooth around the filling and wear the edge. Dry mouth from medication, which removes saliva's repair effect. And the size of the filling: once a filling is more than about half the width of the tooth, the remaining walls are thin and a crown protects them better than a bigger filling. That is the point at which we would say so, with the price of both options written down.
Replacing a filling: what it costs and involves. A white filling is £150 to £220 and a silver one £120 to £160, depending on how many surfaces are involved. Each replacement removes a little more tooth, so the aim is to replace as few times in a lifetime as possible. The general dentistry page covers what a first examination checks.

From Holmfirth take the A6024 or the New Mill road to join the A616, then follow it south over the moor to the Flouch roundabout and on towards Stocksbridge. At the Stocksbridge bypass turn onto Manchester Road (A6102); Deepcar Dental Care is at number 334, on the left after Stocksbridge, with a free car park in front. Allow 25 to 30 minutes from Holmfirth, less from Hepworth or Hade Edge. The moor road is gritted but exposed, so in snow give it longer. For the south of the valley, often yes. Hepworth, Hade Edge and Holmbridge are 20 to 25 minutes from us over the Flouch, and the road is clear of town traffic.
Not unless they have failed. Sound amalgam fillings are safe and durable, and replacing them removes healthy tooth. We will show you each one on the X-ray and say which, if any, need attention.

The A616 rarely closes fully, but if the weather is bad ring us and we will move your appointment at no charge. The alternative is the A628 Woodhead route via the Flouch, which is usually gritted first.
