Glossop is a Derbyshire town that faces Manchester, and for most dental care that is where people go if the town cannot help. The town has two private clinics, a small family-run one on the High Street and a longer-established implant practice, plus a group-owned practice holding the NHS contract. Neither private clinic publishes a fee or its opening hours online, so a Glossop patient finds out the cost of a check-up by phoning. The NHS side is Derbyshire's, and Derbyshire's NHS has been publishing guidance for people who cannot find a dentist.
Deepcar Dental Care is on the Sheffield side of the Woodhead Pass, 40 minutes away. We are private, open 8am to 8pm seven days, and every fee is published: £85 for the first examination with X-rays, £63 for a recall, white fillings £150 to £220. Glossop patients mostly come to us for a specific reason, often an emergency on a Sunday, and some stay for routine care. The group we see most is people who have not been to a dentist for years, so that is who this page is for.
If it has been five, ten or twenty years. This is the most common thing new patients tell us, usually in the first minute and usually apologetically. You do not need to apologise. The examination is the same £85 whatever we find, it is 30 to 40 minutes, and it involves no treatment. You will be told what is there, shown it on the screen, and given a written plan ranked by urgency with the price of each item and the option of doing nothing. Many people who expected a catastrophe leave with two fillings and a hygiene appointment. Enamel is the hardest substance in the body, and teeth are more forgiving of neglect than people fear; gums are less so, which is why the gum measurements matter more than the tooth count.
If you are frightened. Tell us when you book. The first visit can be a conversation in the chair with nothing in your mouth until you say so. Dr George is particularly good with nervous adults, and conscious sedation at £200 a session is available for treatment later if you want it.
If you have lost your NHS place. A missed appointment or two, a move from Manchester, or a practice that stopped its NHS contract. You are not on a list here; you book, you come, and you see the same named dentist next time.
If you want the price first. Everything is on the fee guide and nothing is done until it is agreed in writing. Plans can be spread at 0% over 6 to 18 months.
Who it does not suit. If you have an NHS place in Glossop that sees you when you need it, keep it; band 1 is cheaper than any private examination. If you need frequent short visits, a course of orthodontic adjustments say, Manchester is closer. If you cannot drive and rely on the bus, the Woodhead route is not practical. And in January, when the A628 is closed by snow, nobody should be coming over for a check-up; ring and we will move it. For the person who has put it off for years and wants to walk into a practice that will not judge them, on a Saturday, at a price they already know, the first examination is built for exactly that.

Take the A628 out of Glossop and Hadfield past the Woodhead reservoirs, over the pass to the Flouch roundabout, then the A616 south towards Stocksbridge. At the Stocksbridge bypass follow Manchester Road (A6102); Deepcar Dental Care is at number 334, on the left after Stocksbridge, with free parking directly outside. Allow 40 minutes in clear weather. The pass is the highest main road in the area and closes in heavy snow; check the forecast in winter, and use the Snake Pass and Sheffield as the alternative only if it is open.
