Penistone is a market town with two dentists: a group-owned NHS practice on the High Street that was accepting new patients when we checked, and a private practice that does implants and family care but prints no fees and finishes at 3pm on a Friday. Both close at the weekend. For a town with a lot of self-employed people, farmers and commuters, that leaves Saturday and Sunday uncovered, and a private check-up whose cost you learn at the desk.
Deepcar Dental Care is 15 minutes away at the Stocksbridge end of the A616. We are private only, with every fee published, a first examination for £85 including X-rays, and 8am to 8pm opening seven days a week. Three named dentists, Dr Ibraheem Ijaz, Nik and Dr George, and a senior nurse, Laura, who has been at the practice 28 years and knows most of Penistone's outlying villages by their potholes. If you already have an NHS place in Penistone that works, keep it; this page is for the people it does not fit, and for anyone who wants the aftercare advice below.
A check-up finds problems; the six to twelve months between check-ups is where they are prevented. This is what we tell Penistone patients at the end of a first visit, and none of it costs anything.
Spit, do not rinse. Fluoride toothpaste works by sitting on the enamel. Rinsing with water after brushing washes most of it down the sink. Brush for two minutes, spit out the excess, and leave it. This single change does more for adult decay than any mouthwash.
Clean between the teeth once a day. A toothbrush reaches three of the five surfaces of a tooth. The two it misses are where most adult fillings start, which is why they show up on bitewing X-rays before you feel them. Interdental brushes are easier than floss for most people; the right size is the one that fits with slight resistance. Bleeding for the first week is normal and stops as the gums tighten. Bleeding that carries on is gum disease and needs a hygiene visit.
Count the sugar hits, not the sugar. Every time sugar touches the teeth the mouth turns acidic for about 40 minutes. Three biscuits at once is one hit; three biscuits across the afternoon is three. Keep sweet things to mealtimes and the number of hits falls without giving anything up.
Look after the fillings you already have. A white filling lasts longer if it is not used as a nutcracker. Avoid ice, boiled sweets and pen lids on a filled molar. If a filling edge starts to catch your tongue or floss shreds on it, that is a leaking margin and a small repair now beats a crown later.
Children. A smear of toothpaste under three, a pea-sized amount after, an adult doing the brushing until about seven, and fluoride varnish twice a year at their check-up. Their first examination here is £85.
Recall. National guidance sets the interval between check-ups at anywhere from three months to two years for adults depending on risk. We tell you yours, write it on the plan, and text a reminder. Leave Penistone on the A628 towards Manchester, then take the A616 south at the Flouch roundabout, or the A629 through Wortley and Thurgoland if you prefer the back road. At the Stocksbridge bypass follow Manchester Road (A6102) through Stocksbridge; Deepcar Dental Care is at number 334 on the left, before Oughtibridge, with free parking directly outside. Allow 15 minutes from the town centre, 20 from Millhouse Green or Silkstone. Without a car, the community bus 23 links Penistone with Stocksbridge, and the 57 runs on to Deepcar. Yes, by about half. Deepcar is 15 minutes down the A616; Barnsley town centre is nearer 25 in traffic. Most Penistone, Thurlstone and Oxspring patients find the run down the valley easier.
The 23 community bus runs between Penistone and Stocksbridge, and the 57 or 57a continues along Manchester Road past the practice. Check times before you travel, as the 23 is not frequent.

No. We are a private practice. Penistone's NHS practice was listing open books when we last checked, and if that suits you it is the cheaper route.
It depends on your risk. Adults with healthy gums and no new decay may only need a check every 12 to 24 months; children should be seen at least yearly. Your interval is written on your plan.
Yes. A 30-minute scale and polish is £75 and Airflow is £120, and both can be booked on the same day as an examination.
