Rotherham is better placed than some neighbours: at least two NHS practices in the borough were taking new adults when we checked, and a group-owned practice in Maltby advertises a £39 new patient examination. The private practices in the town centre and the villages are established and well reviewed. What they have in common is what they leave off the website. The practice that ranks first for private dentistry in Rotherham publishes no prices, does not name its dentists and closes on Sundays; the £85 offer elsewhere does not say whether X-rays are included or who you will see next time.
We are 35 minutes up the M1 in Deepcar, on the Sheffield side of the M1 at junction 35A. We are a private family practice with every fee published, three named dentists, and 8am to 8pm opening Monday to Sunday. Your £85 first visit includes X-rays; your recall is £63; and the person who examines you is the person who treats you. Rotherham patients already come for emergency appointments, and many stay.
1. What does the first visit include, exactly? A proper new patient examination is 30 to 40 minutes: history, a check of every tooth and filling, six-point gum measurements, an oral cancer screen and bitewing X-rays. If X-rays are extra, the headline price is not the price. Ours are included in the £85.
2. Who will I see, and will it be the same person next time? Ask for a name and a GDC number. Here it is Dr Ibraheem Ijaz (GDC 301711), Nik or Dr George, and whoever examines you stays your dentist. Continuity is why small changes get noticed: a crack that has grown a millimetre since last year is invisible to a dentist meeting the tooth for the first time.
3. Are the fees published, and is the plan in writing? A verbal quote in the chair is hard to compare and easy to misremember. We give you an itemised written plan with each option, including doing nothing, and the plan holds whether you book now or in six months. The fee guide is public.
4. What happens if I need treatment on the day? Some practices fill the first appointment with treatment; we do not, unless you are in pain and ask. An examination should end with information, not a bill you did not expect.
5. When are you actually open? Many practices list Saturday hours that turn out to be one Saturday a month, or 9am to 1pm. We are open 8am to 8pm every day of the week, including most bank holidays, and the overnight emergency line is answered by the principal dentist personally.
6. What do you do in-house and what do you refer? A general practice that refers root canals, extractions and implants means a second practice, a second examination fee and a second set of X-rays. Here root canal treatment is done under a microscope by Nik, who holds a postgraduate certificate in endodontics; extractions, crowns, sedation and implants are all under one roof.
7. Is there finance, and at what rate? Ask for the APR, not just the words 'finance available'. Ours is 0% over 6 to 18 months through Tabeo, or up to 60 months at 10.9% APR representative, subject to status. Ask these seven questions of anyone, including us, and book with whoever gives straight answers.
Written plans over a few hundred pounds qualify for 0% finance through Tabeo, subject to status, and nothing starts until the price is agreed.

Join the M1 northbound at junction 33 or 34 and leave at 35A, signed Stocksbridge. Follow the A616 west for about eight miles, past Wortley, and take the Stocksbridge turn onto Manchester Road (A6102). Check what the £85 includes. Ours includes bitewing X-rays, a 30 to 40 minute examination with a named dentist who stays your dentist, and seven-day access for anything that follows. If the local offer matches that, use it.
It is one motorway junction and one A-road: M1 to 35A, then the A616. Most patients from Rotherham, Rawmarsh and Wath do it in 35 minutes, and the car park outside is free.
