Chapeltown and Ecclesfield are better supplied than most of north Sheffield: an independent practice on Loundside, two group-owned practices with NHS contracts, and a £39 new patient examination advertised in Ecclesfield. What the S35 practices share is hours. The independent one opens 8.30 to 5 on weekdays and closes at 4.30 on a Friday; none open at the weekend, and none publish a fee for a filling. For a parent with two children at Ecclesfield or Chapeltown primaries, a check-up means a school pick-up problem or an afternoon off.
Deepcar Dental Care is 15 minutes west, through Grenoside and Oughtibridge. We are private, open 8am to 8pm every day, and the first examination is £85 for adults and £39 for children, X-rays included where needed. Every fee is on the fee guide. The dentist who sees your child is the same one who sees them next year: Dr Ibraheem Ijaz, Nik or Dr George. Laura, the senior nurse, has been calming five-year-olds in the same room for 28 years.
Before you come. Book a time when your child is not tired or hungry; 4pm on a school day is the worst slot in dentistry, and a Saturday at 10am is the best. Do not promise 'it won't hurt', which plants the idea. Say the dentist is going to count their teeth.
Arriving. Children under about four are often seen sitting on a parent's lap in the chair, facing the parent, head tipped back onto the dentist's knee. Older children ride the chair up and down themselves first. Nothing goes in the mouth until they have had a go with the mirror.
The count. The dentist counts the teeth out loud, checks each one for early decay, and looks at how the adult teeth are coming through. A child has 20 baby teeth; the first adult molars arrive at about six, behind the baby teeth without replacing any, and are the most commonly filled teeth in the mouth because parents do not know they are there. X-rays, only where needed. Small bitewings are taken when the back teeth are touching and the child can hold the film, typically from about five or six. They show decay between teeth that no torch can find. If a child cannot manage it, we do not force it and look again next time.
Fluoride varnish. A sticky, fruit-flavoured coating painted on in 30 seconds, twice a year from age three. It is the single most effective thing a dentist does for a child's teeth, and it is included in the visit.
The chat with you. Toothpaste amount (a smear under three, a pea after), who does the brushing (an adult until about seven), and the number of sugar hits a day rather than the amount of sugar. Then a recall interval, at most 12 months for a child, written on the plan.
If something needs doing. Nothing is treated on the first visit. Small fillings on baby teeth are done at a second, short appointment with the same dentist, and if a child needs more than we can do gently, we say so rather than push. From Chapeltown or High Green, take the road through Grenoside and drop down into Oughtibridge, then turn right onto the A6102 towards Stocksbridge; Deepcar Dental Care is at 334 Manchester Road on the right, about two miles on, with free parking outside. Ours includes X-rays where needed and fluoride varnish for children, is 30 to 40 minutes with a named dentist who stays your dentist, and can be booked on a Sunday. If the local offer covers the same, use it.
By their first birthday, or when the first tooth appears. Early visits are about getting used to the room; the first real examination is usually around two to three.
Yes. We have slots to 8pm every weekday and all weekend, so a 5.30pm or Saturday appointment avoids missing school or work.
No. We are private, and children's care is £39 for the first visit. S35 has NHS practices, and if your child has an NHS place that works, keep it and use us for what it does not cover.
We go at their pace: a look, a count, a sticker, and home. Dr George in particular is good with anxious children, and no treatment happens until they are ready.
