Dronfield sits between Sheffield and Chesterfield and borrows dentists from both. In the town itself there is a group-owned practice with an NHS contract and an independent practice at Dronfield Woodhouse that publishes a £90 new patient examination including X-rays and sells routine care as a plan from 51p a day. That is an honest way to present it, and more than most practices manage. What is missing is the rest of the price list: what a recall costs outside the plan, what a filling costs, and when the practice is open. Across the border in Chesterfield, the NHS has published guidance for patients who cannot find a dentist, which tells you what the NHS side looks like.
Deepcar Dental Care is 40 minutes north, the far side of Sheffield. We have no plan to join: a first examination is £85 with X-rays, a recall is £63, and every treatment fee is on the fee page. We open 8am to 8pm seven days, with free parking, and you see the same named dentist each time. Dronfield patients already travel to us for implants; the routine care follows because it is the part that keeps the implants.
Take a couple with two children of school age, all reasonably healthy, and follow twelve months of routine care at Deepcar.
Year one. Two adult first examinations at £85 and two children's at £39 is £248, X-rays and children's fluoride varnish included. Two adult hygiene visits at £75 is £150. Most healthy adults need one or two recalls a year, so add one further adult recall each at £63, £126. Children need a check at least yearly and often six-monthly; add a second child visit each at £39, £78. Total for the family, no treatment: £602. Compare a plan at 51p a day for two adults and 16p a day for two children, which comes to about £490 a year and typically covers examinations and hygiene but not X-rays or fillings. On those numbers the plan is cheaper in the first year, and we would rather say so than hide it. What it does not cover is X-rays, and it commits you to twelve monthly payments whether you attend or not. Ours is pay-as-you-attend, so a healthy adult who needs one recall in a year pays for one.
Year two and after. The £85 examination is a first-visit fee, so adults move to £63 recalls. Two adults at one or two recalls each, two hygiene visits, two children's checks: roughly £430 to £560 depending on the recall interval, which is set by risk. National guidance allows healthy adults up to two years between examinations, and we write your interval on the plan rather than defaulting everyone to six months.
Where the real money is. Not in examinations. A white filling is £150 to £220, and the difference between finding decay on a bitewing X-ray at the recall and finding it when the tooth aches at night is the difference between that filling and root canal treatment from £450 plus a crown from £750. Decay between teeth is visible on X-ray a year or more before it hurts. The £63 recall is the cheapest appointment in dentistry because of the £1,200 it can prevent. That is the whole argument for keeping the interval, wherever you keep it.
What is not in these numbers. Petrol and 40 minutes each way, four to six times a year. For a Dronfield family that is real, and it is why we book everyone together and pair examinations with hygiene on the same day. The general dentistry page covers what each visit includes.

The direct route is the A61 north through Sheffield: past Meadowhead, through the city and out along Penistone Road past Hillsborough, then the A6102 through Middlewood and Oughtibridge to Deepcar. For a healthy family they come out close, around £450 to £550 a year either way. Pay-as-you-go wins if you need fewer visits than the plan assumes; a plan wins if you value a fixed monthly figure. Neither usually covers fillings.
Outside rush hour the A61 through Sheffield is about 40 minutes; at 5pm the M1 to junction 35A is more reliable. Sunday mornings either way is 35 minutes.
