Stocksbridge has two dental practices, both now part of national groups, both holding NHS contracts, and both open weekdays only, finishing by five. At the time of writing one lists its NHS books as open to children and closed to new adults; the other's status changes month to month. Neither publishes private fees on its website, so a Stocksbridge adult who wants to be seen quickly is usually choosing between a waiting list and a phone call to find out what a check-up costs.
Deepcar is the next village along the same road. We are private only, open 8am to 8pm Monday to Sunday, and every price is on the website. The first visit is £85 including X-rays. You see the same dentist each time: Dr Ibraheem Ijaz, who owns the practice, or one of two associates, Nik and Dr George. Laura, our senior nurse, has been here 28 years and knows half of Stocksbridge by name. Free parking is directly outside and the 57 bus stops within a short walk.
It suits shift workers. Stocksbridge still runs on rotas: the steelworks, the hospital in Sheffield, the distribution sheds off the M1. A dentist that only opens 8am to 5pm on weekdays means booking a check-up as unpaid time off. We have 7pm slots on a Tuesday and 9am slots on a Sunday, and an examination takes 30 to 40 minutes, so it fits between a night shift and sleep.
It suits families who want one practice. Children are welcome and their first examination is £39. A family of four can be seen in a single hour on a Saturday morning. We keep children's visits gentle: a ride in the chair, a count of the teeth, fluoride varnish if it is due, and no pressure to do anything they are not ready for.
It suits people who have fallen out of the system. Moved to the Underbank or Bolsterstone estates, lost your NHS place through a missed appointment, or simply not been for six years and dreading the lecture. There is no lecture. A long gap is the most common reason new patients give us, and the examination is the same £85 whatever we find.
It suits anyone who wants the price before the treatment. Every item on your plan, from a £150 white filling to a crown, is written down with the alternatives before you agree to anything. Nothing is done at the first visit except the examination, unless you are in pain and ask.
It is not right for everyone. If you already have an NHS place in Stocksbridge, you are happy with your dentist and you are seen when you need to be, stay. NHS band 1 is cheaper than any private examination, and we would rather you kept a relationship that works. If you need a specialist orthodontist for a child, that is a referral we would make too. Head out of Stocksbridge on Manchester Road (A6102) towards Sheffield. Deepcar Dental Care is at number 334, on the right about two miles from Fox Valley, before you reach Oughtibridge. Allow five minutes from the town centre, ten from Bolsterstone or Underbank. Parking is free on the forecourt. The Stagecoach and First buses along Manchester Road stop close to the door. I called Friday evening to see if they had emergency appointments due to serious tooth pain. They were very polite and willing to accommodate. Due to me being a 45-minute drive away — the closest dentist I could find on Google that was open — they assured me they would see me when I got there.
