Wakefield has one of the tighter NHS pictures in Yorkshire. When we checked the directories, no NHS practice in the district was listed as taking new adult patients, and only a couple were taking children. The private clinics in the city centre are modern and, to their credit, publish prices: a new patient visit around £65, hygiene around £125, white fillings from around £195. They open weekdays to five and Saturday until mid-afternoon, and they tell you to use the local car parks.
Deepcar Dental Care is 40 minutes south on the M1. We are private only, the first examination is £85 with X-rays, white fillings are £150 to £220, hygiene is £75, and we open 8am to 8pm seven days with free parking on the forecourt. That is the case for the trip. The rest of this page is about doing the switch well, because we see Wakefield patients who have changed dentist three times in five years and are no better off.
1. Choosing on the headline price alone. A £85 or £65 examination tells you nothing until you know whether X-rays are included, what a recall costs, and what a filling costs. Ask for all four numbers. Ours are £85, included, £63 and £150 to £220.
2. Leaving the old records behind. Your previous practice holds your X-rays and charting, and you are entitled to copies. Old bitewings let a new dentist see whether a shadow between two molars has grown since 2022 or has sat still for years, which is the difference between a filling and a note to watch. Ask for them before your first visit, or tell us and we will request them.
3. Booking treatment on the first day. An examination should end with a written plan and time to think. If a new practice wants to start drilling before you have seen the prices, slow down. Here the first visit is examination only, unless you are in pain and ask.
4. Assuming every old filling needs redoing. A new dentist who condemns every restoration in the mouth is either seeing failures the last dentist missed or padding a plan. Ask to be shown each one on the screen and told why. Sound amalgam fillings can last 20 years; the fix is to replace what has failed, not what is old.
5. Skipping the gum measurements. Gum disease is the main reason adults lose teeth and it is painless until late. A first examination should include six-point pocket measurements around the teeth; 1 to 3 mm is healthy, 4 mm with bleeding is early disease. If nobody put a probe in your gums, you have not had a full examination. Bleeding when you brush is never normal, and a hygiene visit is the cheapest thing you will ever do for your teeth.
6. Waiting for pain before booking. Decay between teeth shows on a bitewing X-ray a year or more before it hurts. By the time a tooth aches at night the nerve is usually involved and the choice is root canal treatment from £450 or extraction, when a £150 filling would have done a year earlier. The fix is a recall interval you actually keep. We write yours on the plan and text you when it is due.

Join the M1 southbound at junction 39 or 40 and leave at 35A, signed Stocksbridge. Follow the A616 west for eight miles past Wortley to the Stocksbridge bypass, then Manchester Road (A6102) into Deepcar. Deepcar Dental Care is at number 334, on the left between Stocksbridge and Oughtibridge, with free parking directly outside.
