Chesterfield has enough NHS trouble that the local NHS body has published guidance for patients in the town who cannot find a dentist, and enough private practices that you have a choice. The private practices that rank first for Chesterfield are long established, name their principals and open weekday office hours with one late evening. What almost none of them do is publish a fee. Denplan and 'finance available' appear without a price or an APR, and a Chesterfield patient finds out the cost of a check-up by ringing.
Deepcar Dental Care is 45 minutes away, on the far side of Sheffield. We publish every fee, open 8am to 8pm seven days, and see new patients within the week for an £85 examination with X-rays. We would rather be straight about what the distance costs you, so the next section is the case against us, followed by the case for.
It is 45 minutes each way. For a check-up every six to twelve months that is fine. For a course of six short visits it is not, and we would say so and organise treatment into fewer, longer appointments, or suggest you have the routine work nearer home and keep us for what Chesterfield cannot offer. A lower wisdom tooth near the nerve, a root canal under a microscope, an implant, a Sunday morning emergency: those are worth the M1. A single small filling on its own is not.
We are private, and private costs more than the NHS. An NHS band 1 check-up is cheaper than our £63 recall, and band 2 covers fillings for a fixed sum. If you have an NHS place in Chesterfield that sees you when you need it, keep it. We are for the people who do not, and for the people who want a longer appointment, white fillings on back teeth and the same dentist every time.
The examination price is fixed, and so is the one after it. The first examination is £85; after that a routine recall is £63. We say this up front because a first-visit price that hides the ongoing cost is exactly the sort of thing this page is complaining about elsewhere.
Our fillings are not the cheapest in the region. A white filling is £150 to £220, the top of that being a three-surface molar rebuilt with a matrix band and bite-checked before you leave. Some practices charge less. The number is on the plan before you book the appointment, and the plan is yours to take elsewhere for comparison.
The M1 at 5pm. Junction 29 to 35A is 25 miles of motorway that crawls on a Friday evening. Book mornings or Sundays, when it is 40 minutes door to door.
What you get for putting up with all that. A 30 to 40 minute examination with bitewing X-rays, six-point gum measurements and an oral cancer check; a written, itemised plan with the alternatives, including doing nothing; the same named dentist from examination to treatment; every fee on the website; 8am to 8pm every day of the week; an emergency line answered overnight by the principal; and free parking on the forecourt. Decay between teeth shows on a bitewing well before it hurts, and the whole argument for a good check-up, from Chesterfield or anywhere, is finding it then rather than paying for root canal treatment later. The quickest route is the M1: join at junction 29 (or 30 from Staveley and Brimington), north to junction 35A, then the A616 west towards Stocksbridge for eight miles and Manchester Road (A6102) into Deepcar. Allow 45 minutes. The alternative is the A61 through Sheffield, past Meadowhall and Hillsborough, then the A6102 through Oughtibridge; it is slower in traffic but avoids the motorway.
