Doncaster is the furthest town we see routine patients from, and a check-up is not worth the trip for everyone. It makes sense in three situations. The first is NHS access: several Doncaster practices now take new NHS patients only as children, others quote waiting lists, and a number of private practices in Sprotbrough, Bessacarr and the town have closed NHS books altogether. The second is hours: the top-ranking private practice in Doncaster runs split shifts on weekdays and a Saturday morning, and none of them open on a Sunday. The third is knowing the price. The three dentists are named on the team page with their qualifications, and the one who examines you is the one who treats you. A good check-up is judged by what you know when you walk out. After a proper examination at Deepcar you should be able to answer all of the following.
Do I have any decay, and where? Not 'you're fine' but a tooth-by-tooth answer, with the bitewing X-rays on the screen in front of you. Decay between teeth shows on a bitewing as a small grey triangle under the contact point, often a year or more before you could feel anything. You should see it, not be told about it.
How are my gums? A number, not an adjective. Gum pockets are measured in millimetres at six points around the teeth; 1 to 3 mm is healthy, 4 mm and above with bleeding means early gum disease. If nobody measured, nobody knows. Bleeding when you brush is never normal, and it is the earliest and most fixable sign there is.
Are my old fillings and crowns sound? Every restoration is checked for a leaking edge, a crack or wear, and the ones to watch are written on your plan with a date to look again. A filling that has been there 15 years is not automatically a problem; a filling with a dark line at its margin might be.
Has anyone checked for mouth cancer? Lips, cheeks, tongue, the floor of the mouth and the neck. It takes under a minute. Ask if it was done; you should have felt the dentist lift your tongue.
What does it cost, and what happens if I wait? A written, itemised plan with each item priced, the alternatives, and an honest note on what deteriorates if left. The most useful sentence a dentist can write is 'watch, no treatment needed', and a good plan contains it as often as it is true.
When do I come back? A recall interval chosen for you, usually six to twelve months for adults, with a hygiene recommendation alongside. Everything in that list is what the £85 visit is for, and if you have a check-up anywhere that does not leave you able to answer them, it was a look, not an examination. Take the M18 west to the M1, north one junction to 35A, then the A616 towards Stocksbridge for about eight miles. Turn onto Manchester Road (A6102) and Deepcar Dental Care is at number 334, on the left between Stocksbridge and Oughtibridge. For a check-up every six to twelve months, plus the odd filling, yes: two or three trips a year. Families book everyone together on a Saturday to make it one trip. For weekly orthodontic adjustments it would not be, and we would say so.
