The Rotherham aligner market, and what it does not tell you

Search for aligners in Rotherham and the pages that come up are polished and confident, but read them with a pen in hand and you will notice what is missing. The highest-ranking practice page publishes no price at all, does not say which dentist would treat you, and says nothing about X-rays, gum health or who is unsuitable. Where Rotherham clinics do quote, the range runs from about £2,500 for a light case to £5,000 or more, and one group practice starts above £5,000.

So you will need to ask in person. At Deepcar Dental Care the answers are already on this page: from £1,495 per arch, retainers included, X-rays before any plan, one dentist throughout, and Dr Ibraheem Ijaz, the practice owner, accountable for the standard. Rotherham patients reach us in about 35 minutes via the M1 and A616, with free parking outside. Whether you come to us or stay local, here are the questions worth asking any dentist before you hand over a deposit.

Nine questions to put to any dentist offering aligners

What is the total, and what does it include?

Not the monthly figure. Ask whether retainers, refinements and the scan are in the number or added later. Ours includes all three.

Will you take X-rays first?

Teeth move by remodelling the bone around their roots, so the roots and bone need to be seen. A practice that starts from a scan alone is skipping a step.

Are my gums healthy enough?

Moving teeth through inflamed gums speeds up bone loss. If the answer is a shrug, be careful. If it is a hygiene visit first, that is a good sign.

Who plans the case, and who will I see?

Some practices send the scan away and a technician plans it; the dentist approves it on screen. Ask who checks the plan clinically and whether the same person sees you at each review.

What will you not treat?

Short-term treatment covers the front six to eight teeth. A dentist who never refers to a specialist orthodontist is either seeing very simple cases or taking on things they should not.

How long, and what makes it longer?

Front-teeth cases here take four to nine months. Wearing aligners under 22 hours a day, losing one, or a stubborn tooth all add time. You want a range, not a promise.

Will you polish enamel between my teeth?

Crowded teeth need space, and a fingernail’s thickness of enamel is sometimes removed between them. It is safe when planned, but you should be told before, not after.

What holds the result?

Teeth begin drifting within days of the last aligner. Ask whether retainers are included, whether a fixed wire behind the teeth is an option, and how long you should wear them. The honest answer is: at night, for as long as you want the teeth straight.

Can I see it written down?

Fee, number of aligners, months, retainers, finance terms. If a clinic will not put it on paper before you pay, that tells you something.

Questions, answered

Teeth straightening: questions from Rotherham patients

Why would I drive from Rotherham when there are aligner clinics in town?

Because you can read our price before you ring, see the same dentist every time, and book reviews at 8am or 7pm seven days a week. If a Rotherham clinic answers the nine questions above to your satisfaction, stay local.

Is the M1 route from Rotherham reliable for early appointments?

Junction 35A to Stocksbridge is a quiet stretch and rarely holds you up. The Parkway and Tinsley end can be slow at 8am, so most Rotherham patients book either before 8am traffic builds or after 6pm.

Which aligner brand do you use?

We choose the aligner system for the case in front of us rather than promoting one brand. What decides the result is the planning, the wear time and the retainers, none of which come from the box.

How do I know if I am suitable for short-term treatment?

If your concern is crowded, gappy or uneven front teeth and your bite is broadly fine, you probably are. If your back teeth or jaw relationship need changing, you need a specialist orthodontist and we will refer you.

Can straightening be combined with replacing a missing tooth?

Yes, and the order matters: align first, then replace, so the gap is the right size. Our implants for Rotherham page explains how the two are planned together.

I called Friday evening to see if they had emergency appointments due to serious tooth pain. They were very polite and willing to accommodate. Due to me being a 45-minute drive away — the closest dentist I could find on Google that was open — they assured me they would see me when I got there. Upon arrival the staff were so polite and welcoming. The expertise and advice before the procedure was amazing. Definitely worth the trip to get the pain away. 100% recommend them.

Visited today for a private emergency appointment. The practice was very clean and tidy, the staff very friendly and helpful. They really listened to my concerns and put me at ease. Addressed the problem and extracted my tooth — nothing was too much trouble. Swift service — top notch.
