Each tooth sits in its socket held by a ligament, a web of fibres that runs from the root into the bone and the gum. Aligners work by stretching those fibres on one side and compressing them on the other; the bone remodels, and the tooth moves about a quarter of a millimetre per aligner. The fibres in the gum are the slow part. They keep their old tension for a year or more after the tooth has stopped moving, which is why a freshly straightened tooth will drift back towards where it started within days if nothing holds it.
So the honest answer to how long it lasts is: as long as you wear a retainer. With nightly wear the result should last for the rest of your life. Without one, most people see the lower front teeth begin to crowd again within a year or two, and the same is true of teeth straightened with childhood braces, which is why so many of our adult patients have been through this before.

A cracked or warped retainer.
Gum disease.
Age itself.
Losing a back tooth.
For people who know they will not manage nightly wear, a thin wire bonded behind the front teeth holds them for years without any effort, and it is an option we discuss at the final appointment. A removable retainer is thinner than a bank card; a fixed one you forget is there.

Take the M18 west to the M1, head north one junction and leave at 35A for the A616 towards Manchester.
