Sheffield is not short of dental practices, but it is short of the kind that fit around a working week. Most private practices in S10, S11 and the city centre open Monday to Friday, close by six, and quote a first visit between £65 and £90, often without saying what that includes or who you will see. On the NHS side, directories list around half of Sheffield's NHS practices as accepting new adults, and Healthwatch Sheffield warns that those records go out of date quickly, so for many people the practical answer is a ring-round that ends in a waiting list.
Deepcar sits inside the Sheffield boundary, on the A6102 between Oughtibridge and Stocksbridge. We are a private general practice that publishes every fee, is open seven days including evenings, and sees new patients within the week. Your first visit is £85 including X-rays, and there is free parking on the forecourt rather than a hunt for a space on Ecclesall Road. Nobody is sold anything on the day: you leave with a written plan and prices, and decide at home.
Before you arrive. You book online or by phone and fill in a short medical history. Tell us if you are nervous or have not been for years; it changes the pace, not the welcome.
The first ten minutes. The dentist asks what has brought you in and what you want from your teeth, which is a different question. Then a look at the outside of the mouth and neck, the lips, cheeks, tongue and floor of the mouth. This is the oral cancer screening. It takes under a minute and most patients never notice it happening.
Teeth and gums. Each tooth is checked and charted, along with every existing filling and crown. Gums are measured with a fine probe at six points around selected teeth; a reading of 1 to 3 millimetres is healthy, and bleeding on that gentle touch is the earliest sign of gum disease, well before anything feels wrong. Your bite is checked for wear and cracks, the usual cause of pain on biting.
X-rays. Two small bitewing films are taken where they will show something the eye cannot: decay between the teeth and bone levels around them. A bitewing delivers less radiation than a day of natural background exposure. Decay between teeth is often visible on these films a year or more before you could feel it, which is the whole point of catching it now.
The conversation. The dentist shows you the images on the screen and explains what is healthy, what to watch and what needs treating. If anything does, you get a written, itemised plan with the price of each item and the alternatives, including doing nothing. If nothing does, you get a recall interval and a hygiene recommendation.
Who you see. Dr Ibraheem Ijaz, the principal, or one of the associates, Nik or Dr George, examines you and stays your dentist for any treatment that follows. Laura, the senior nurse, has been here 28 years. The whole visit takes 30 to 40 minutes. A white filling, if you need one, is a separate 45-minute appointment, priced on the plan before it is booked.
Larger plans can be spread with 0% finance over 6 to 18 months through Tabeo, subject to status, and every fee is confirmed in writing before treatment starts.

From the city centre take the A61 Penistone Road north past Hillsborough stadium, then the A6102 through Middlewood and Oughtibridge. The practice is at 334 Manchester Road, Deepcar, on the left before Stocksbridge, with a free car park directly outside. Allow 25 minutes; from Hillsborough it is 15. Without a car, take the Supertram to Middlewood and the 57 or 57a bus along Manchester Road, which stops close to the door. You get a written plan with every item priced and ranked by urgency, and time to think. Where a tooth needs more than a filling, root canal treatment, a crown or an implant is explained with costs, and finance is available for the larger items.
